SOMA's an idea that seems still, to be taking shape. Following the 1906 earthquake, this area was rebuilt to support light industry, and an influx of workers and transients ensued. At one time, prior to the unfolding of the AIDS epidemic, this area supported a thriving gay community, of which the few remaining popular gay bars, and the annual Folsom Street Fair, remain.
The area continues to develop in fits and starts. Dot com companies that didn't fold in the bust, have hunkered down in renovated warehouse spaces. Certain small alleys, including the famous and lush South Park, have been developed into lofty and hip residences. The SF MOMA and Yerba Buena Gardens have created fertile ground for development of more art and performance spaces. Local bars and nightclubs that once hosted an underground music scene now attract a more upscale clientele.
While some of the old buildings here remain untouched, much of the area has been developed into tall towers of modern residences around which, restaurateurs have invested in a smattering of solid eateries.
