The Castro

Once a neighborhood of working-class Irish, the Castro became more prominently known as San Francisco's gay village in the 60's.  Rainbow flags fly high and prominently throughtout this lively neighborhood.  Gorgeous old homes, tasteful gardens, great nightlife and a high proportion of sunny days annully, make this one of the most coveted neighborhoods in San Francisco - for families, singles, and even out-of towners, looking to feel at home.

Some of San Francisco's best parades and parties, including Gay Pride and Halloween in the Castro, take place in, and just around this neighborhood.  The eponymous Castro Theatre, hosting old and art house films and highly entertaining performance art, is possibly one of the best historic movie houses in the nation.
