The Marina/Cow Hollow

Long gone, are the Indians who used to live on the marshes in this waterfront area of San Francisco.  Now, rubble created from the 1906 earthquake, has filled up the marshland, and hopeful Marina residents now reside here, with hopes their mostly low-rise homes may withstand future quakes and fires.

This comfortable area is famous (or notorious?) for being the opposite of the Mission.  What the Mission offers in the way of art, diversity and a healthy dose of grunge, the Marina cannot provide.  Tidy houses, well accessorized residents, and a high percentage of cookie cutter chain stores, keep the Marina culture, predictable.  Some say, it's a great place to transition socially, from earnest college grad, to well-salaried bonds trader.

Reasons to go to the Marina if you don't live there?  An incredible waterfront park and education center - Crissy Field.  Views of the Golden Gate Bridge. The landmark Palace of Fine Arts and Exploratorium, and some outstanding restaurants, including A16 and Laiola.
