The business heart of the city, downtown San Francisco is abutted by several eclectic residential neighbohoods - North Beach, China Town, and SOMA. Possibly the most traffic friendly major city in North America, this is a downtown filled with public transport, and cycle-savvy commuters. Bart, Muni, and the Ferries dump thousands of 9-5ers off each day and take them away again at night. Motorcycle parking abounds while ridiculously expensive metered parking for cars, puts a cramp in auto parking. All the better. Who wants tons of cars in a city center?
This area is peppered, with restaurants and shops that cater to workers and a slew of tourists, who flock to Union Square and its commercial surrounds. Those in the know, can find hidden bars, clubs, galleries, bookshops, gyms, cafes, fountains and residential/pedestrian alleys that still afford this area a smaller-town feel.
Though it's officially placed in an area now called, "China Basin" the Ferry Plaza Farmer's Market, at the bottom of Market Street, is a Mecca, for those who appreciate what San Francisco has done to help revive America's interest in healthier, seasonal, locally grown foods.
