The Outer Sunset is a favorite, of surfers and people who disdain the stress of street parking in other parts of the city. Laid-back and in some parts still, shall we say "rustic," the Outer Sunset is the Inner Sunset's slacker cousin. Fogged in for a good portion of the year, the Outer Sunset won't offer what other ocean front locales elsewhere in Cali may - endless sunny beach days. Um, no.
While there are a few commercial strips offering some decent coffee, local bars, tasty eats and organic foods, the Outer Sunset lags behind other neighborhoods in the city where great restaurants, cafes, bars, lounges, and specialty markets are plentiful. That said, for those who couldn't give a rat's ass about all that - the Outer Sunset is a great place to invite friends who want to escape the social constructs elsewhere in SF.
Are you big into weekly grilling? Parking space for all, your cars and motorcycles? Maybe you just want your kids to have a little bit of yard and space to play a game of catch in the street? The Outer Sunset is for you.
Oh, and did we mention it's within stone's throw of the Pacific? For those who've spent time floating in the Carribean, or aimlessly wandering the sands of various east coast islands along the Atlantic, Ocean Beach's draw will be a bit of a mystery. Blustery winds, fog half the year, vast amounts of damp sand and a poorly designed "highway" bisecting the neighborhood from the beach, possibly keep this from upping the value of this ocean-front spot.
