At first, I thought it was just me. Maybe I was simply too exhausted/excited/bored as I was traveling in and out of the San Francisco International airport, to be so taken with the art work on display.
Early signs there was something going on - myself rubbernecking as I raced by the glass cases lining the moving walkways along the United terminal. An exhibit last year on product design. And not just a small collection of dusty objects crammed into one case, but case after case of well documented and explained objects, including earlier renderings and models that led to each object's existence in the world.
Just last weekend I was en route to Seattle via Virgin America's portal in the International Terminal and was stopped in my tracks, by morning sunlight pouring onto giant works of art clinging to the walls. Not dusty old paintings from the 1970's, but modern, gorgeous works hovering over the two story waiting gates. Nice.
Finally this morning I decided to Google "airport art SFO," and came up with the link to the San Francisco Airport Museums. Perhaps most of you already know about the aviation library and museum at SFO. But did you know there's an aquarium in gate C1? And, if you've got a ridiculously long layover and children in tow, you can take them to Kids' Spot II, interactive exhibitions from San Francisco's Exploratorium, in North Terminal? Crazy. And awesome.
Through October, there are shows titled Scandinavian Modernism: In Pursuit of Function and Beauty, and Calling the Earth to Witness: Eight Centuries of Buddhist Imagery from Southeast Asia. Also coming soon are shows on Victorian Kitchens and model trains. Makes you want to get a Bart pass and get yourself out to SFO. It's only a 20-30 minute ride from San Francisco!
